If we have a smaller government... then we'll have less taxes and less debt.
If we had less taxes and less debt, then we wouldn't be in this mess.
Why can't we leave it to the people to take care of each other? Do we really have so little faith in each other? Oh. You're right... without the government everyone would starve. All of these NGO's and non-profit organizations do nothing. People never donate, volunteer, serve or give.
Oh Government, come save us from ourselves please.
“Americans, often acting through voluntary organizations, should have the opportunity to solve many of the social problems of their communities. This spirit of freely helping others is uniquely American and should be encouraged in every way by government.” - Ronald Reagan

So I guess I wonder if people had to fend for themselves, would they? You know how the worst of times are supposed to bring out the best in us? Well what was Katrina all about? People were told to leave, they chose not to, and when things got bleak and unsafe they got mad at the government for not being there for them. I’m not excusing the government’s inaction, but I feel like it’s not so much that that the government did nothing as it was individuals not taking care of themselves. Interestingly enough, Mississippi was hit at the same time, okay not the same extensive flooding but the hurricane damage was equal, and they suffered less because first of all when they were encouraged to evacuate, they did, and when help didn’t come, they helped themselves. My point is, being dependent is a lifestyle choice; so would these people ever learn to take care of themselves?
Good question. I haven't studied a lot of social psychology, but maybe instead of government funding for bailing people out, the government instruct people on how to help themselves? Since we're using hypothetical questions: If the government didn't give so many services, would people learn to do things on their own? Would they realize that they need to be independent and prepared?
My other question is why was Mississippi different from New Orleans? It's interesting that both large groups had the same lifestyle choices to either be independent or dependent. How was their mindset formed?
I don't know.
